Morning Meditation: "Lift Every Voice And Sing" 6/19/2020
Happy Juneteenth! We pray that you'll enjoy what is widely known as "The Black National Anthem." Jay Fluellen, a member of St. Thomas' Music Ministry, offers his talents on piano and voice, as "Lift Every Voice And Sing" ushers us into our weekend. ("Lift Every Voice and Sing" - is a song written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938) in 1900 and set to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson (1873–1954) in 1905.) Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, is an American holiday celebrated annually on June 19. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union general Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them almost two and a half years earlier, and the American Civil War had largely ended with the defeat of the Confederate States in April, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.)
